Gold Electrowinning |
|

SX Kinetics has the expertise to design and manufacture gold electrowinning plants for the recovery of gold from sodium cyanide solutions. | |

![]() Schematic diagram of a process to recover gold from cyanide solutions by carbon adsorption and electrowinning onto steel wool cathodes.

|
Description of Process:
Lean electrolyte containing 10 to 20 g/L sodium cyanide at pH >10.5
(adjusted with sodium hydroxide) is heated to 90°C and pumped up
flow at 2 bed volumes perhour through a stationary bed of activated
carbon loaded with gold. The gold that was adsorbed on the carbon as
a sodium-gold cyanide complex (NaAu(CN)2)
will be desorbed (eluted) from the carbon by a reversal of the
adsorption mechanism. The solution exiting the top of the column
(know as rich electrolyte) will flow by gravity into the
electrowinning cell and the gold will be recovered by plating onto
steel wool cathodes. The lean electrolyte will flow from the
electrowinning cell by gravity into an electrolyte tank where the
concentration of sodium cyanide and sodium hydroxide can be adjusted
prior to pumping it through the circulation heater (for reheating to
up to 90°C) and back to the column for reuse. For more details: EW Pilot Plant 12

| The gold that is deposited onto steel wool cathodes by our electrowinning plants is further refined by smelting with borax flux. The gold is melting in crucibles and the molten gold is poured and cast into ingots. SX Kinetics can provide all the melting and casting equipment with our electrowinning plants. |
